Stock and IRA gifts
The most tax-smart gift most donors never make.
Giving appreciated stock instead of cash is often the single most efficient way to give: you avoid capital gains tax on the growth and can typically deduct the full market value. If you are 70 and a half or older, a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA can count toward your required minimum distribution without adding to your taxable income. Same generosity, noticeably better math.

Why give stock instead of cash
Skip the capital gains
Donate shares held over a year and the gain that would have been taxed becomes charity instead. You give more without spending more.
Deduct the full value
You can generally deduct the full fair market value of the shares on the day of the gift, not just what you paid for them.
IRA gifts that lower taxable income
A qualified charitable distribution goes straight from your IRA to OEBB, counts toward your required minimum distribution, and never touches your taxable income, even if you do not itemize.
A $5,000 stock gift can fund vision screenings for an entire school and still cost you less than a $5,000 check.
Start from your brokerage
Pick where your shares are held to open that firm's gift-of-securities instructions. Email us first for OEBB's receiving account and DTC number, so your shares arrive with your name on them.

Does this really save taxes?
For most donors with appreciated shares in taxable accounts, yes, meaningfully. We are volunteers, not tax advisors, so please confirm the specifics for your situation with yours.
What if my shares have lost value?
Then the math usually favors selling them (harvesting the loss) and donating the cash proceeds instead. Your advisor can confirm.
OEBB volunteers are happy to help, but we are not tax or legal advisors. Please confirm the specifics of your situation with yours.
Every route leads to the same place: a child who can see and learn.
100% of your contribution goes to helping children and families in need. OEBB board members and volunteers are unpaid.
